I write and host live trivia for booked events around Charleston. Off-sites, parties, fundraisers, takeovers. Every question set gets written by hand for one room, by the person who then stands up and reads it out.
01 The difference
Most trivia comes out of a box.
Almost every trivia night you have played was bought from someone. One company writes a question set, licenses it out to forty hosts, and half the city ends up answering the same questions on the same evening.
There is nothing wrong with that, exactly. It just is not written for anybody in particular, and you can feel it by the third round when the questions clearly belong to a different room than the one you are sitting in.
So I ask who is actually coming. Which department reckons it is the smartest, who the night is for, what the running joke is. Then I write it around that, host it and score it myself, which means nothing gets lost between the page and the microphone. The best team name I have had across a season was I thought this was AA, who then won by eleven points, so they had earned it.
